Saturday 3rd December, 20:00, Bordeaux. The Girondins hosted Lille for their 16th game of the Ligue 1 season. Unfortunately for the home fans, LOSC inflicted Bordeaux's first defeat since 1st October.
In last week's match against Dijon, the Girondins dominated the first half but ended up conceding a goal just before half time. This week...
In the 44th minute, Sébastien Corchia swung in a corner. There was a scuffle in the box, but Jérôme Prior managed to get the ball away. Unfortunately it only got as far as Nicolas De Préville, who pounced to fire home from close range.1-0, seconds before half-time.
Until then, everything seemed to be going Bordeaux's way. The Girondins were by far the more threatening of the two teams, even if they lacked accuracy in the final third. Their best movements came down the wings, led by Youssouf Sabaly and Gaëtan Laborde. But Lille keeper Vincent Enyeama was rarely troubled. Diego Rolan had the best chance of the first half, but his header was wide of the mark.
Jocelyn Gourvennec brought Adam Ounas on for young Zaydou Youssouf at half time, bringing his first starting appearance for the first team to a premature end. Clearly, the manager was looking for some more pace in midfield in order to break down the LOSC defence. In the 70th minute Ounas picked out Jérémy Ménez with a long ball, but Vincent Enyeama had it covered.
The defining event of the second half came in the 73rd minute. Stretching to connect with a cross inside the box, Nicolas Pallois was hauled down. Penalty. Diego Rolan did the honours, but his shot bounced back off the crossbar. A cruel turn of events...
In the last 20 minutes, Lille decided to see the game out with various time-wasting ruses and a relentless series of fouls. A late appearance from Malcom was not enough to turn the tide, despite a free kick in injury time which very nearly pulled Bordeaux level. Igor Lewczuk managed to put the ball in the net barely a minute later, but the flag was up for offside.
After a long unbeaten run, and despite a solid performance here tonight, the Girondins came unstuck against Lille. The boys in blue will need to pull themselves back up and prepare for their crucial game against Monaco this week.
