The boys in blue were keen to prove themselves against Lorient, in their penultimate pre-season friendly in Morbihan. Jocelyn Gourvennec's squad have been hard at work since the end of June, and have one more friendly to play before the season kicks off on Saturday 13th August at 17:00 against St-Etienne.
Bordeaux hosted Lorient this evening for their Coupe de la Ligue quarter-final. Willy Sagnol's side were looking to continue their recent run of good form, with one eye on the Stade de France. No easy task against the Merlus, who have been solid away from home recently. Despite injury problems for both clubs, the managers fielded their strongest possible teams.
It all started so well... Diego Rolan gave Bordeaux the lead in the 38th minute. But after the break things were very different indeed. Lorient equalised then took the lead courtesy of Moukandjo (48'), Waris (64') and Touré (80'). Substitute Adam Ounas reduced the gap late-on (89'), but Lorient held out for the win.
No doubt about it, the Girondins have got plenty of character. This victory over Lorient made that much abundantly clear. Twice trailing the visitors (32’ and 50’), Bordeaux pulled one back before half-time courtesy of Wahbi Khazri (44’). Cheick Diabaté came on for the final half-hour, sealing victory with two goals in three minutes (64 and 66’).
In his weekly press conference Willy Sagnol reflected on the mid-week draw with FC Metz and looked ahead to this weekend's clash with FC Lorient. He also discussed the atmosphere within the squad, which he described as excellent!
