The Girondins held old rivals to a draw, working hard to bring back a point from the legendary Stade Vélodrome. The atmosphere was electric, and both teams came very close to scoring. Another draw leaves Bordeaux in 9th place with 16 points, two points ahead of OM.
It's a match we look forward to every year: it's been 38 years since Marseille won in Bordeaux, and OM will have to wait another year to try to overturn that record. Wahbi Khazri equalised for Bordeaux (57') almost instantly after Romao gave the visitors the lead (56'). The first half was scrappy and dull, but the second half had the packed stadium buzzing!
Aimé Jacquet was the guest of honour for Bordeaux-Marseille. The man who coached the Girondins de Bordeaux between 1980 and 1989 also dropped into the club's HQ at Le Haillan on Monday for a dinner with former players inlcuding Giresse, Battiston, Trésor and Stopyra, along with his faithful deputy Bernard Michelena, Willy Sagnol, Jean-Louis Triaud and Alain Deveseleer.
Tonight's match between the Girondins and Olympique de Marseille certainly lived up to the hype. Bordeaux were deserving winner, and have now not lost to OM at Chaban-Delmas in 38 years. The winning goal came from Cédric Yambéré, with Mariano providing the assist (61st minute).
